Abstract:

In the recent years several electroanalytical studies dealing with the AdSV monitoring of various anthraquinone-based reactive dyes have been reported in the literature. However, all these published papers were based on the AdSV measurement of these reactive dyes following the electrochemical reduction of their anthriquinone moieties. Nonetheless, it was well established in the literature that several anthraquinone compounds could undergo tautomeric rearrangement to form anthrone derivative. Hence, the applicability of AdSV technique for the analysis of Reactive Blue 19 has been demonstrated in this current work. The electrochemical analysis of this anthraquinone-based reactive dye with vinylsulfone anchor group was achieved via its anthroquinone and anthrone AdSV signals alike. In contrast to the chlorotriazine-based reactive dyes, the electro-inactivity of vinylsulfone reactive group permit and allow the observing of the extra AdSV signal associated with stripping volumetric reduction of the anthrone derivative. Finally, a proposed electrode reduction mechanism for both anthraquinone and anthrone systems was suggested.
