Abstract

Kinetics and oxidation of Nitrite by Iodine Monochloride (Ici) and Iodine Monobromide (Ibr) in Aqueous Acetic Acid and Perchloric Acid Medium

Keeran Sankar Tripathy*, Ejaz Ahmed

Abstract:

A kinetic study on oxidation of NO2 by ICI (Iodine monochloride) in aqueous acetic acid and perchloric acid media has been carried out. The order with respect to oxidant is unity. In case of ICI the dependence on [substrate] is fractional. The order with respect to [H+ ]is less than unity. Effects of salt like KCl has been studied. On changing the oxidant from ICI to IBr in presence of mercuric acetate the orders with respect to [IBr] and No2- are unity, fractional with [H+] and [Hg(OAc)2]. This strikingly dissimilar kinetic behaviour has been traced to the differences in reduction potentials of ICI and IBr systems. The activation parameters have been computed and plausible mechanisms are suggested.
