Abstract:

Pyrazolines was suspended in DMSO and a crystal of iodine added to it. The mixture was refluxed for one hour, cooled, diluted with water. The solid obtained was filtered, washed with 20% aqueous sodium thiosulphate and crystallised from ethanol to get pyrazole. The same reaction was carried out in DMSO-I2-H2SO4 system affords 3-(2”-hydroxy-3”-substituted-5”-chlorophenyl)-5-(2’-furyl)-pyrazole. Pyrazoles were tested for antimicrobial activities against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus vulgaris, Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus megatherium. All compounds were found effective against both Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria in the MIC range of <25-200 μg/ml.
