ABSTRACT:

C3H5HgSCN react with M(NCS)2 [M = Co(ll) and Ni(ll)] to form compounds of general formula (SCN)2 M(NCS HgC3H5)2. These compounds behave as Lewis acids and form complexes with pyridine and 2,2' -bipyridyl. The Lewis acids and the complexes are characterised by elemental analysis, molecular weight determination, molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility measurements, IR spectral, electronic spectral and X-ray diffraction patterns. These studies indicate that M and mercury atoms are linked by bridging thiocyanate groups. Cobalt is tetrahedrally coordinated, whereas nickel is octahederal. Pyridine form adducts of general formula (py)2(SCN)2 M(NCSHgC3H5)2 while 2,2' - bipyridyl form cationic - anionic complexes of formula [M(bipy)3][C3H5Hg(SCN)2]2.
