A facile one step synthesis of title compounds (3a-f) has been prepared in good yield. Treatment of 1 -hydroxycarbazole derivatives (1a-f) with 3-chloro-3-methyl-1 -butyne (2) in the presence of anhydrous aluminium chloride afforded the requisite 2,2-dimethyl-2H-pyrano(2,3-a] carbazole derivatives (3a-f).
