Analysis of River Water Residues by High Performance Liquid Chromatography With Ultraviolet and Fourier Transform Infrared Detection

ABSTRACT:

The high performance liquid chromotography (HPCL) to Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry with a thermospray interface procedure developed for analysis of linear alkylbenzene sulphonate (LAS) was employed to analyse the samples of the upstream and downstream river water residues. The peaks obtained in ultraviolet (UV) and FTIR detection chromatograms were not LAS, except spiked sample. The HPLC-UV-FTIR measurement showed the peaks in their chromatograms were probably for humic substance. The HPLC-FTIR interface derived spectra of the samples compared to those of the standard spectra of LAS and humic acid. Spectra comparison depicted that the degradation products of LAS, humic substances or a mixture of those compounds were probably be present in the upstream and downstream river water samples.
