ABSTRACT:

Chlorine containing low molecular weight polyketones were synthesized from m-methyl phenetole, chloroacetyl chloride and dichloroethane and dichloromethane by the Friedel-Craft's reaction using anhydrous aluminium chloride as catalyst and carbon disulfide as solvent. The polyketones thus obtained were characterized by IR spectroscopy and vapour pressure osmometry. The percentage chlorine content of the resins was determined by method of Carius. Thermogravimetry and Differential scanning calorimetry were used to study thermal properties. Evaluation of the kinetic parameters for the decomposition reactions was done by the Broido and Doyle methods. All the polyketones were tested for their microbial properties against bacteria (B. subtilis, E. coli, P. fluorescens), fungi (A. niger, T. longibrachiatum, P. chrysogenum) and yeast (R. minuta, S. cerevisiae, P. stipitis). The results shows that the polyketones inhibits the growth of microorganisms to the considerable extent.
