ABSTRACT:Seven different chalcones I (a)-I (g) were synthesised by literature method from 2-hydroxy-5-methyl-acetophenone and tested for antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris, Bacillus megatherium and antifungal activity against Candida albicans, Candida guillermondii, Candida tropicalis and Candida crusei. Seven different 3-aroylflavanones and 3-aroyl-chromanones (IIa-IIg) were synthesised and tested for antibacterial and antifungal activity using above test organisms. Both chalcones and 3-aroylflavanones, 3-aroyl-chromanones showed antibacterial and antifungal activities. 3-aroylflavanones and 3-aroylchromanones were more effective than chalcones against fungal species. Both 3-aroyl-flavanones and 3-aroylchromanones exhibited highest antifungal spectrum against Candida crusei.
