An efficient one pot synthesis of 3-cyanocoumarins using phase transfer catalysis

An efficient one pot synthesis of 3-cyano and 3-cyano-4-methyl coumarins is being reported starting from 2-hydroxybenzaldehydes and 2-hdroxyacetophenones with ethylcyanoacetate. The reaction was carried out at room temperature using phase transfer catalysis in good yield, short time and easy work up. The structure of the compounds have been confirmed on the basis of their analytical IR, I H-NMR spectral data.
