ABSTRACT:

The Theophylline molecule is of considerable biological and pharmaceutical importance. Vibrational spectra of theophylline has not been investigated. In order to study the structure of theophylline, the infrared spectrum of theophylline has been recorded in the region 4000-400 cm-1 on a PE 963 high resolution double beam grating instrument at l.l.T. Madras. The assignment of the fundamental frequencies is made on the basis of magnitude and relative intensities of the observed bands. The assignment C-H, C=N, C=O, C=C, C-C, etc., have been discussed.
